Hot Cut Vs Cold Cut: Which Tape Cutting Method Suits Your Material?

Understanding when heat-sealed cutting prevents fraying on synthetic tapes, and when cold cutting is the better choice for printed or delicate labels.

Tape and label cutting machines generally offer two cutting methods, and choosing the wrong one for your material can mean frayed edges, melted print, or inconsistent batches.

Hot cutting uses a heated blade that simultaneously cuts and fuses the edge of synthetic materials — ideal for velcro, ribbon, satin and other polyester or nylon-based tapes where a raw cut edge would fray over time or during garment washing.

Cold cutting uses a straight, unheated blade and is the better choice for printed labels, heat-sensitive materials, or any tape where melting the edge would damage print quality or material integrity.

Many of our machines — including our hot and cold blade label cutting machines — support both methods on the same unit, so you're not locked into one process as your product mix changes.
